Paknampo Nakhonsawan Becomes First Hospital in Thailand to Achieve HIMSS Analytics EMRAM Stage 6

Nakhonsawan, 21 March 2016 – HIMSS Analytics Asia Pacific announced today that Paknampo Hospital has achieved HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6. The EMRAM award is an international benchmark for the use of advanced IT to improve patient care. This award makes Paknampo the first hospital in Thailand to achieve Stage 6.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), hospitals can review the implementation and utilisation of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment. Reaching Stage 6 is a result of focus, good direction and a steadfast commitment from leadership. Stage 6 institutions have established clear goals for improving safety, minimizing errors, and prioritizing IT implementations.

"One of the key success factors in improving clinical outcomes and being the employer of choice lies in how one utilizes the innovative medical technology in the hospital," said Dr. Pongsak Viddayakorn, President, Paknampo Hospital.

With top management buy-in and commitment, these are some of the achievements that Paknampo has attained in its journey to Stage 6:

  • Employed the use of mobile medication carts that consist of an integrated laptop computer, a handheld barcode scanner, and individual patient medication drawers that can only be opened once a patient has been scanned and positively identified by bedside system.
  • Successfully demonstrated the closed-loop medication administration process from CPOE to second line validation to unit-dose medication dispensing with barcodes, bedside scanning, administration, and eMAR update.
  • Implemented a CDS feature for nursing and physician documentation called "Prompt". When a nurse or physician adds a new problem to the problem list and clicks on the "Prompt" function, the system will auto-populate his or her notes with recommended assessments and documentation that are specific to the new problem. The nurse and physician can then click on each new word or phrase to document if the condition, situation, or symptom is present or absent.
  • Presented two other clinical decision support rules that are triggered for physicians by either a diagnosis of diabetes or hypertension.
  • Nurses have structured documentation templates that allow them to quickly conduct their nursing assessments and capture discrete information.

Dr. Satit Yiddayakorn, Chief of HealthCare Strategy Officer said, "Using technology in the hospital is not a fashion, our purposes are to focus on patient safety, reduce cost, and improve the quality of work life. Our accomplishment in doing so was a result of great collaboration between doctors, nurses, hospital staffs, and IT, who shared the same focuses."

Besides internal support, the hospital also worked closely with IT and convergence systems solution providers who aided in the implementation of the software required for Stage 6 validation.

"Paknampo Hospital has good reason to feel very proud for achieving Stage 6. They began their EMR adoption journey in 2014 and have worked tirelessly to transition from a completely paper-based environment to now being very close to having a paperless environment. They already have their sights set on achieving Stage 7 and given what I observed during this visit, I believe they can do it," said John Daniels, Global Vice President, Healthcare, Advisory Services Group, HIMSS Analytics.

Moving forward, Paknampo Hospital is working towards interfacing a Smart ICU software with HIS by the end of 2016 and hospital-wide full digitization by 2017.

Paknampo Hospital will receive their award at the HIMSS AsiaPac16 Conference and Exhibition, 23 – 26 August, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand. Visit (English) or (Thai) for more information.
